Wrong Type Size

Design Tip: Wrong Type Size
By Roger C. Parker

Type that’s too large can be as hard to read as type that’s too small! Oversize type slows readers down by making it hard for readers to scan several words at a time. Optimum conditions for reading occur when your reader’s eyes can scan three of four words at a glance, rather than forcing them to slow down and “sound out” individual letters. Undersized type is hard to read for several reasons. One is that readers have to squint to see the type, which quickly leads to eyestrain.

The right type size is based on a combination of typeface design and the width of the column. The best approach is to try out different combinations of typeface, type size, and column width. Often, one point differences in type size can make a big difference in message readability.
