Widows and Orphans
Design Tip: Widows & Orphans
By Roger C. Parker
| Avoid subheads, short phrases, and word fragments isolated at column tops or bottoms. Subheads should always introduce at least two lines of text. A subhead appearing by itself at the bottom of a column, introducing text appearing at the top of the next column, or on the next page, is apt to appear strange and confuse readers. Likewise, a few words isolated at the top of a column, or—worse—the end of a hyphenated word carried over from the bottom of the previous column, is awkward and hard to read. A single line from a previous paragraph isolated at the top of a column or page is also awkward. In general, edit paragraphs so that at least two lines of a paragraph appear together when they appear at the top or bottom of a column or page. |
