Font Licensing Overview

This page provides an overview on how font software is licensed by FontMarketplace for your use. FontMarketplace uses the Ascender Corporation End User License Agreement (EULA) for all fonts sold on the site. This EULA defines how you can use the fonts and restrictions of use. For example, you are permitted to use the font on one (1) personal computer by default. To use the font on additional workstations simply change the quantity of Licensed Computers.

View a copy of the Ascender EULA.

Permitted Uses
You are permitted to install the font onto the number of personal computers for which you have purchased licenses. You can use the fonts to create and design documents, and embed the fonts into documents such as Flash or PDF files. Files with embedded fonts can be freely distributed and posted on websites as long as they are not sold (what we refer to as "Commercial Documents").

Prohibited Uses
The font files cannot be modified, posted to websites or further distributed without an extended license. Nor can the fonts be installed onto a file server or web server without an extended license (described below). Please read the Ascender EULA for complete description of the license grants.

Ascender offers a variety of extended use font licenses to meet the needs of its customers who want to use the fonts beyond the terms granted in the EULA:

Commercial Product License
This allows fonts to be embedded into documents that are sold, such as electronic books.

Multi-Workstation Font License
Simply enter the desired quantity of computers you want to install the fonts on when ordering, and the price will automatically be calculated.

Enterprise-Wide Font License
Similar to Multi-Workstation Licenses, Ascender can accommodate the needs of enterprises that want to install the fonts throughout their organization. If you want a price quote for a global font license, please Contact Ascender.

Application Server Font License
This allows the fonts to be installed onto a server for use with an application that is accessed by an unlimited number of users. Two options are offered:
- Internal Use (i.e. an Intranet within an entity)
- External Use (i.e. for Internet-based applications)

Hardware & Software Developer Font License
Ascender works with a variety of hardware and software developers who need to include fonts with their products. Ascender can license an existing font or create a custom font for a developer's product. Often developers require font modifications for character sets or to be tuned for a certain display environment.

Examples of OEM and ISV Font Licenses:

  • Games
  • High Definition DVDs
  • Mobile Phones
  • GPS devices
  • Kiosks
  • Software
  • Hardware Displays

Font Modifications - Custom Fonts - Bespoke Fonts

The Ascender EULA does not permit modification of the font software. If you are interested in having a custom version of the font created, we are happy to help. Ascender has worked with a variety of companies and agencies to create custom fonts and bespoke fonts for branding and corporate identity programs. We have also worked with customers to add logos, customize characters, add OpenType features and extend character sets to support additional languages. Please contact us to discuss your particular needs, or visit our Custom Fonts page for more information
