Correct punctuation and symbols

Using the Correct Punctuation and Symbols
By Roger C. Parker

Always insert the proper punctuation and symbols. Some software programs will automatically insert the proper symbols for open and closed quotation marks, and apostrophes, but there are usually other punctuation symbols you can insert.

For example, replace a hyphen with a slightly longer en dash (–) to indicate duration, i.e. June–September.

Whenever possible, replace words with symbols. For example, instead of spelling out copyright, register mark or trademark, insert the appropriate symbols: © ® ™.

Use an ellipsis (…), a symbol containing three carefully spaced periods, instead of three separate periods (. . . ) to indicate omitted  or abbreviated text.

Windows shortcuts for common symbols:

© (Copyright) Alt + 0169

® (Register Mark symbol) Alt + 0174

(Trademark) Alt + 0153

(Euro Sign) Alt + 0128

(En Dash) Alt + 0150

(Em Dash) Alt + 0151

(Ellipsis) Alt + 0133

Correct Quote Marks:

“Proper Quotes” vs. "Inch Marks"

‘Proper Single Quotes’ vs. 'Foot Marks'
