Font Tips: Selecting the best font size for Legibility & Readability
You’ve chosen a set of fonts because they have the right “personality” for your project. Now the next big decision as you start to layout your document is what is the best font size? No matter whether you are creating a newsletter, an invitation, a presentation or a web page, selecting the right font size is critical to achieving optimal legibility and readability.

Legibility
We use the term “legibility” to describe the quality of how the letterforms look on screen or when printed. Some fonts, including script and decorative fonts, have very delicate shapes so you need to increase the font size to ensure the essence of the typeface design is not lost. Typefaces should be chosen carefully depending on whether you are setting a headline or text. Most headline typefaces (like Curlz) are not meant for more than a few words. Their distinctive and graphic appearance are meant to grab attention or enhance the personality of your document. Text typefaces have the hard work of conveying the important details of your message and should be carefully chosen for their clarity and character.

Readability
We use the term “readability” to describe how easy it is for your readers to quickly scan your document and capture the meaning of what you have written. Here is a general guideline to consider: Try not to exceed 10 to 12 words (or 75 characters) per line of text. Studies have found that using too many words on a line decreases reading comprehension.

Font Size Tip
In Microsoft Word use the Word Count tool to determine how many words or characters you are using per line. Consider increasing the point size for fonts which appear too small and indistinguishable to better convey your message.
